The week of June 11th-16th Emily Anderson attended American Legion Auxiliary WV Rhododendron Girls State. Throughout the six days she listened to guest speakers including Senator Shelley Moore Capito and other WV state elected officials. She participated in learning about our state government and learned many leadership skills.
Girls State has a mock election, where Emily ran for the House of Delegates. She was elected into the House among her peers. With this, she made history and was given the opportunity to take part in the very first joint Legislative session between Mountaineer Boys State and Rhododendron Girls State. The bill that she took part on passed through both the House and the Senate. It was titled Community Mental Health Initiative. This bill extended access to facilities and services for mental health in the state of WV. Emily said “It was one of the best things I have ever experienced, and Girls State will always hold a special place in my heart!”
Emily is a senior at Calhoun Middle High School and is the daughter of Shannon and Trudi Anderson.
