Five Lady Pioneers Reach Double Figures in Blowout Win Versus Salem

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneer Basketball team won their sixth in a row and nearly reached the century mark in Saturday’s (Feb. 7) 98-68 victory over Salem inside the Waco Center. GSU is now (18-3) overall with the non-conference win against the Tigers.

1st Half
It was a slow start offensively for head coach Emily Stoller‘s squad, but a jumper from Niko Kaufmann and three-pointer by Keanti Thompson extended the Lady Pioneer lead to six with three minutes left in the opening quarter. Salem trimmed the deficit to two later in the stanza and trailed by just three at the end of one. In the second quarter, Glenville State outscored Salem 32-10, which was fueled by their 19-2 run in the middle of the quarter that saw the Tigers score just two points in six minutes of action. The Lady Pioneers took a 25-point cushion into the locker room, 51-26.

2nd Half
A 29-point third quarter helped extend the GSU lead, with Thompson and Carine Pinkneycontinuing their strong performances with buckets in the stanza. Wonder Nkoyock and Payton James delivered layups late to build the advantage to 80-47 going into the fourth quarter. In the final 10 minutes of play, JayCee Elzy gave GSU their biggest lead of the game (36) and Maria Quesada Ortiz nailed a triple as the Lady Pioneers closed out the Tigers, 98-68.

Salem
Meilin Guo scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Salem as Akhia Miller added 11 points. Selena Frost and Fatima Bakoyoko both scored 10 while Batoul Khaleefah led the Tigers in rebounding with eight.

Glenville State
GSU forced 38 Salem turnovers and 11 Lady Pioneers recorded a steal, including the team’s leading scorer, Carine Pinkney, who notched 17 points, four steals and three assists in the win. Keanti Thompson and Wonder Nkoyock both had 13 points while JayCee Elzy (12 points) and Khalia Bryant (11 points were both in double figures.
