Grantsville Town Council wait in Hope for Next round of Funding

The Town of Grantsville City Council met on Monday evening with Council Members Linda Staton, William Villers, Cheryl Sturm, Recorder Judy Powell, and Mayor Robert Petrovsky present.

Gayle Ford spoke during Citizens Concerns over dogs on North Side Road disturbing the peace and wanting the ordinance enforced. He stated that he had been attacked, as well as another woman in the neighborhood.  He also complained that there was an issued with dogs on Wigner Street and advised that the dogs on North Side should be checked out to see if the animals are being treated properly or abused. 

Town Recorder, Judy Powell informed Mr. Ford that Northside is out of city limits and would be a matter for the Sheriff’s Department. However, Mayor Robert Petrovsky said that he would address the matter with Sheriff Graham Knight and Officer McCroskey.

The Mayor spoke regarding Source Water Protection Plan informing that the WV annual Protection plan is online. He also spoke regarding the town tennis courts saying that he is still pursuing getting the tennis courts resurfaced but has been unable to find anyone willing to do it. 

Jarod Anderson spoke via phone to discuss with council the changes that had been made to County Planning Commission’s Comprehensive Plan. The City had made their recommendations but there had been additional changes made. The changes were made to the vision statement and language under governance. Mayor Petrovsky changed the city staff numbers, listing 7 employees ( 4 in the water department, 1 in maintenance, 1 in the office and 1 in the sewer department.) Anderson noted that he would update the latest rates from the WV Public Service Commission website. Also added to the Comprehensive plan under Education was the LK Christian School as a private school. New Organizations in the area that were added was:

  • The 1982 Foundation
  • Bootstraps
  • Heartwood in the Hill
  • Dart (Domestic Abuse Response Team)
  • Calhoun FRN (Family Resource Network)
  • Calhoun Livestock program 

 A matter that the planning commission felt needed addressed was for Emergency housing for people displaced due to natural disasters. Calhoun currently has nothing in place with the exception of an Emergency temporary Shelter Memorandum of Understanding with the Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department. A Motion to accept the changes as outlined was made by William Villers, seconded by Cheryl Sturm, motion passed. 

Jake Frady of the MOVRC presented a Dunn/Thrasher invoice in the amount of $4030 for draw 24 on the Water project. Motion by Linda Staton, 2nd by William Villers, Motion passed. 

Mayor Petrovsky mentioned that he found it very interesting that Mt. Zion got 1.2 Million dollars recently in funding, and the Town of Grantsville was not considered. Jake Frady said there was still hope on other funding requests coming from congressional money. Frady commented that only 17 were approved from hundreds of applications. The Mayor plans on contacting Speaker of the House, Roger Hanshaw in hopes of garnering funds. 

Frady also presented Sewer Project draw #14 in the amount of $1394.59 to MOVRC. A motion was made for approval by Cheryl Sturm, seconded by Linda Staton, motion passed. 

Tuesday’s Election Canvas of votes will be held on June 12 at 8 p.m. in the City office by council. There are 327 registered voters in Grantsville. Motion by Linda Staton to hold the election canvas, 2nd by William Villers, Motion passed. 

The final matter of business for the evening was a motion to pay bills made by Cheryl Sturm,  2nd by Linda Staton, motion passed. The meeting was adjourned at 6:46 p.m.
