Jacob McCumbers Announces Candidacy Platform

I am Jacob McCumbers, and I am running for Calhoun County Commission. I have lived in Calhoun all my life with my family. I went to school in Calhoun, later attending Glenville State College and receiving my degree. I currently live in Arnoldsburg with my three children: Jimmy, Tyler, and Colton. I currently am an educator and working at Arnoldsburg Elementary School. During my time and career, I was a 911 dispatcher for 8 years, the county assistant to the Office of Emergency Service, a volunteer fire fighter/EMS employee, I also serve as a county representative for the deputy sheriffs’ civil service board, democratic executive committee, and the president of the local association for West Virginia Education Association where I serve as the liaison between Charleston and the local education association for Calhoun. Over the years I was also a 4-H member and a leader, in which I started the Pleasant Hill Corn Poppers 4-H club, because I knew that the youth needed something to do in that area.

If elected to the Commission, I will dedicate my time bringing better opportunities to Calhoun, along with extra grant funds to help allocate the tax funding we receive yearly, bring something here for the youth of Calhoun, because today’s youth is tomorrow’s future. Our population has dropped in the past years and will continue to drop, further dropping an estimated 350 by 2030 based on the census. If more opportunities are brought to this county, or extra activities for youth, then this number will begin to slow. Those who know me, know I will give 110% to accomplish this by working with fellow commissioners and other organizations to achieve better success for ALL.

I feel like the Commissioner’s goals should be to help lay and disburse county funds based on the population. I also feel that the Commissioner’s job is to make sure local citizens know where their tax dollars are going. As a Commissioner I feel that it should be my number 1 goal to bring fast and affordable internet to the citizens of Calhoun County to help build back the county. This has been a major issue not only for the working people, but for students of Calhoun, who are unable to complete school work reliably. With COVID coming about in 2020, internet usage has become a bigger part of everyday life. With all this in place, better jobs and opportunities can come to rural Calhoun and allow our youth the same benefits as other locations, also helping further development of the county park and make it better than what it is today. We have one of the best night skies in the region and can welcome more people or even open a better destination for those to visit and camp at the Calhoun County Park. With that being said, I hope to have your vote on May 10th. Feel free to message with any questions or comments via email at jacobmccumbers@frontiernet.net. Let’s make a change one vote at a time. I’ll “bee” the change that is needed.
