With the generous support of the John and Ruth McGee Foundation, Glenville State University is pleased to announce a new five-year scholarship program for primary education majors. This program will provide $100,000 in support for the next five years to our West Virginia students pursuing education degrees.
Scholarships will be awarded to high-need students from West Virginia who are pursuing careers as public-school teachers. Scholarships will go to students with demonstrated need after all other federal and state assistance has been awarded. Recipients may use funds to cover tuition, Praxis exam costs, and other expenses related directly to completing primary education degrees and obtaining licensure as teachers. The selection committee will show a strong preference for applicants who intend to teach in West Virginia after graduation.
President Mark Manchin stated, “This partnership with the McGee Foundation will be life changing. An educator is one our greatest assets and retaining those educators here in West Virginia is a big win for our state and the lives of those children they will be impacting in the classroom.”
Through these initiatives, Glenville State University hopes to:
- Increase enrollment in our teacher education programs
- Improve retention rate among early-career teachers in West Virginia
- Close the gap on the West Virginia teacher shortage
- Increase the number of highly qualified teachers in our West Virginia classrooms.
