A group of over 40 Roane County 4-H members, cloverbuds, parents, grandparents, and volunteers participated in the WVU Day at the WV Legislature on January 30 to celebrate the change-making efforts of WVU and WVU Extension across West Virginia. This free event featured information and activities from organizations across WVU.
The annual event highlighted areas of opportunity for workforce development, economic prosperity, health care and youth programming. The group had the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities, explore interactive exhibits and discover the importance of civic engagement. Youth development, STEM, health care, volunteerism, safety, nutrition and more were featured. Youth interacted with a robot from the WVU Robotics program, learned how to operate fire extinguishers from WVU Extension Occupational Safety and Health, and saw a heartbeat demonstration from the WVU School of Nursing program.
WVU Jackson’s Mill presented activities in rope bracelet making, food waste prevention and outdoor education to the group. Additionally, the Mountaineer mascot posed for a photo opt with the group.
The group also had scheduled meetings with Senator Glenn Jefferies and Representative Erica Moore where they learn how a bill becomes a law and important economic concerns for the state of West Virginia, followed by a preview of the senate and the house of representatives in session. To conclude the day, the group was able to tour the West Virginia Culture and History Museum.
