Former Calhoun Prosecutor Shannon Johnson filed for reelection Monday. She promises to stick to her personal motto of “service above self” if reelected. Johnson brings over eighteen years of prosecutorial experience to the ballot. She served as Calhoun Prosecuting Attorney from 2013 to 2020. Since 2021, Johnson has been furthering her skills as an Assistant Prosecutor in neighboring Clay County.
Of her bid for reelection, Johnson said, “It was a true honor to be elected as Calhoun Prosecutor by my fellow citizens. I have dedicated my whole career to public service. As your prosecutor, I will fight every day to uphold the Constitution and to ensure a safe community for us here in Calhoun. I appreciate everyone’s consideration in this election and I hope I can gain your vote.”
Johnson, a 1995 graduate of Calhoun County High School, attended the WVU College of Law. After her graduation in 2002, she served two years as Law Clerk for the Circuit Judge in Elkins, WV. She has gained over eighteen years of experience as a Prosecutor between her time as Calhoun Prosecutor, Clay County Assistant Prosecutor, Randolph County Assistant Prosecutor, and as Special Prosecuting Attorney for the City of Elkins.
Johnson is a certified trainer for the West Virginia Prosecuting Attorney’s Institute. She has taught various workshops for them including a week-long training for fellow prosecutors on driving under the influence cases. She serves on the West Virginia Children’s Justice Task Force and has also taught several classes around the state on the prosecution of child sexual abuse cases for fellow prosecutors, law enforcement officers, teachers, medical professionals, and social workers.
In 2008, Johnson was named the West Virginia Young Lawyer of the Year.
Johnson was born and raised in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Randall and Sue Jones, of Mt. Zion. She is married to Jeremy Johnson, Principal at Arnoldsburg Elementary School. They live in her childhood home at Mt. Zion.
