Following the meeting on Thursday, May 11th, 2023 to appoint a Calhoun County Sheriff following the resignation of Warren Basnett, comments began to come into Ridgeview News regarding the wording used to appoint Nathan Allison, Sheriff of Calhoun County. When Commissioner Kevin Helmick made the motion to appoint Allison he used the wording “Motion to Appoint Nathan Allison interim Sheriff.” This was echoed by Commissioner Matt Walker when he seconded that motion. The appointment was not for “interim Sheriff” but rather Sheriff. (4 minute mark on Facebook live video)
Prosecuting Attorney Nigel Jefferies was contacted about the matter to which he responded: “With respect to the appointment, I am looking into the matter to ascertain whether there was a variance between the notice that was posted and what was subsequently voted on in the meeting. If there is such a variance, then a new meeting would have to be a scheduled, properly noticed, to fill the vacancy.”
Although a notice has yet to be sent to Ridgeview News regarding the meeting, Nathan Allison did acknowledge that he was told of a meeting of correction regarding his appointment.
