Ridgeview News reached out to Michael Fitzwater, Superintendent of Schools for a statement on the current condition of the students involved in the Monday night accident on Route 16. The following statement was provided.
As a continued effort to update the Calhoun County community regarding the bus accident that occurred on the evening of March 4th, here are the facts:
– 19 students were riding the bus.
– the students aged from ages eleven to eighteen.
– The bus was the evening activity bus leaving Calhoun County Middle High School.
– The bus tipped off its side at approximately 5:50 p.m. on State Route 16.
– EMS responded quickly, and evacuated students from the rear of the bus.
– 10 students were transported to Minnie Hamilton, zero students remain at this hospital.
– 8 Students were transported to Roane General; zero students remain at this hospital. One of those students was transported to CAMC General and are receiving the necessary care for injuries.
– Two students were flown to CAMC General, two students remain at this hospital.
– Law enforcement charged the bus operator, Jeffrey Allen Brannon, with multiple crimes. Questions related to Mr. Brannon’s criminal charges should be directed to law enforcement.
– Mr. Brannon will be subject to personnel action. We cannot provide additional information relative to personnel actions but assure the community that all applicable laws will be followed, and we are cooperating with the West Virginia Department of Education to ensure Mr. Brannon never again operate a school bus for Calhoun County or any school system.
