William J. “Bill” Wood, 59, of Chloe, West Virginia, passed away August 6, 2025, at his home, just one day before his 60th birthday.
He was born August 7, 1965, in Akron, Ohio, the son of the late Nancy C. Pifer Wood.
Bill lived a life marked by service, devotion to family, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys in life.
After graduating high school, Bill proudly joined the United States Marine Corps for four years. His time in the military instilled in him a strong sense of duty and resilience that would guide him throughout his life.
In 2002, Bill began working for the State of West Virginia in homeland security. His commitment to public service was unwavering until he was diagnosed with cancer in 2024. Even during his illness, Bill remained active and determined—often found working on his camper between treatments as he prepared for future adventures.
Bill was a devoted family man who cherished every moment spent with his loved ones. He is survived by his children Erika Wood, Brandon Wood, Bryan Gungle, and Sean Gungle, along with their families. He also leaves behind his beloved sisters Theresa Moon and Cheryl Hill and their families. He is now reunited in peace with his wife, Kathy Wood.
Bill found great joy in spending time with his grandchildren and going camping—two passions that brought him closer to nature and those he loved most. He also enjoyed playing video games from time to time, embracing fun wherever he could find it.
Those who knew Bill remember him as a gentle soul with an outgoing spirit. People were naturally drawn to him—his warmth and kindness left lasting impressions on everyone he met. He was an extraordinary husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend whose presence will be deeply missed.
