Sergeant Cory Maynard of the West Virginia State Police was shot and killed while responding to a shooting call in Mingo County on June 2, 2023. Twenty nine year old Timothy Kennedy of Beech Creek, WV opened fire on responding officers, fatally wounding Sergeant Maynard and then fled the scene. This stemmed from a shooting where a uniformed member of the West Virginia State Police was shot. Troopers responded to a shooting complaint in the Beech Creek area of Mingo County. Once on scene the Troopers were met with gunfire.
Kennedy was captured approximately six hours later.
According to an update on the WV State Police site last night at 10:50 PM, 911 confirmed the suspect had been arrested in Beech Creek. At 7 p.m. Governor Jim Justice confirmed Sergeant Cory Maynard was shot and killed.
