Getting to know your candidates: Roger Propst

Hello, my name is Roger Propst. I am running for Calhoun County Commissioner. I grew up on Southside Hill in Grantsville with my two older brothers, Jim, and Ron, at the end of Hathaway Street. My father was killed in an automobile accident in Parkersburg when I was four years old, Ron was ten, and Jim was thirteen. My mother moved us back to Grantsville in 1952 and raised us to adulthood as a single mom on a small Social Security Check.  We were poor, but none of us knew it. Our home was our refuge, and we were surrounded by love. My mom was a great woman who devoted her life to her boys.

Upon graduation in 1965 from Calhoun High School, I received a $200 scholarship from Calhoun County Bank. That was enough for my first year of college at Glenville State. Tuition was less than $100 for a full-time student per semester.  I was employed at Rubber Fabricators on Russett Road in the Summer, evenings, and Saturdays because Mr. Pete Zannoni, one of the owners of the company had faith in me, and other students who needed a financial boost. During this time, I married my beautiful wife, Loretta Hathaway, and we embarked on our life together.

In the years following, Loretta and I were blessed with two children, Jennifer Lynn, and Gregory Allen, who we would tragically lose during our journey through life. Greg was lost to suicide in 2000, and Jennifer to cancer in 2011. We could withstand the losses only through strong faith and God’s strength. Our circle will be whole, someday.

I have been employed over the years at DuPont, DHHR, Calhoun Schools, Director of Computer Systems at RESA V, and National Computer Systems as a work-from-home Implementation Specialist and Project Manager. I traveled to 30+ states and the US Virgin Islands during my employment with NCS.

I am an Army veteran having retired with 21 years of service at the rank of Master Sergeant, E-8, in the Military Police Corps, and as a Senior Instructor of Leadership for Non-Commissioned

Officers.

I currently serve on the Calhoun County Commission filling the unexpired term of Matt Walker who relocated outside our county. Having won the Republican nomination in the May 2024 Primary Election, I am now the Republican Candidate in the General Election on November 5th to complete the final two years of his term. Save two years away in Parkersburg, I have spent my entire life in Calhoun County.  I know the strength, work ethic, devotion to family, love of home, and determination shared by its residents.

I respectfully ask for your vote on November 5th to complete the final two years of Mr. Walker’s unexpired term.
