There were 254 riders on the Creston ATV Poker Run. Judy Williams placed first followed by Dale Taylor & Ashley Buckbee. John Hall won the 50/50. The community would like to thank all those who came & rode, those who set up and took down the route, did the parking, filled out the forms, fixed the food, served the food, sold tee shirts & chances on the cross bow, cleaned the building and all those businesses & individuals who donated items for the door prizes. Some ended up on the side, including the set up crew, some broke down, fell in the mud or landed up in a mud puddle but everyone had fun. The crew that came out the Saturday before the ride did a bunch of hand work which made the road up Thorn’s Run passable. The highway repairs were still passable after all the riders went through. Game was plentiful on the route and there were lots of gold finches and two scarlet tanagers.
The local area continues to have hot muggy weather with rain, sometimes excess. The Pee Wee area had Right Reedy and other streams out of their banks. The West Fork, Spring Creek and the main river were all up and very muddy [in violation of EPA rules].
Sgt. Thomas Fluharty, US Army retired, age 75, passed away after a protracted illness. It was reported that the crowd at the viewing was immense. Burial was in the Fluharty cemetery at the head of Leading Creek.
Randy Eugene Robinson, age 59, of Creston passed away. He is survived by his wife Pamela and son Caleb. He was the son of Randolph Robinson who lived at Nobe.
The power company sprayed their rights-0f-way around Creston with herbicide.
The Wirt road crew was mowing the roads around Creston and cut a steel gas line near the McCray/Snyder graveyard.
Glen & Chuck Cogar were attending to business in Creston.
The United States Postal System increased postage rates again. A first class letter went up 5 cents to 78 cents and penny post cards now cost 61 cents. Older residents remember when they mailed letters for 3 cents and unsealed Christmas cards could be sent for 1 ½ cents. The cost of postage is an obvious example of inflation. Other examples are flat rate natural gas wells & gas storage rentals based in 1895 prices. “Why $300 is a lot of money, most farmers would consider they had done well to make that in a year.” (in 1895).
The West Virginia Division of Highways refused to fix the hill going down into Rock Camp which was on the Creston Poker Run claiming that such was not part of “Core Maintenance”. Some one will get hurt down in there and then there will be no to get help but, obviously, Dimbulb is still in charge. Core maintenance included having high dollar equipment cutting down a big shade tree in a lawn in Williamstown along W. Va. 14 and having big equipment tear down trees growing over the bank from I-77. It was reported that I-79 south [north bound] of Morgantown is still a bottleneck with traffic backed up for miles. Seems that there are no portable stoplights for the ‘bypass’.
There was a big gathering in Pittsburgh concerning data centers, power plants to run such and the source of the energy to fuel the new power plants & President Trump was there. It was announced that $92 billion was to be invested in Pennsylvania in the new Data Centers & the power plants to operate the facilities. EQT, the Pittsburgh oil & gas company is to supply $15 billion in natural gas for the operations. This was put together by one of Pennsylvania’s US Senators who understands business and is obviously working for his constituents.
Obviously, West Virginia’s “leaders” both in Washington & down at the Mouth of the Elk are/were asleep at the switch as W. Va. Has huge gas reserves that could power data centers built in West Virginia. One of “our” US Senators directed his effort in getting “his” man in as head of the W. Va. State Republican party as a new chairman is to be chosen Saturday at the meeting in Morgantown.
Mother Hope (Hope Gas) has been working on gas lines in the Creston area.
Folks in the Creston area continue to get scam calls about medicare/medicaid telling about all “the new plans”. One call said it was from WVU Medicine.
The price of local Pennsylvania grade crude is $66.54/bbl. With condensate fetching $48.54/bbl. And Marcellus & Utica light bringing $55.54/bbl.
