Calhoun County Park News

The monthly Calhoun County Park Board Meeting was held Thursday, April 4, 2024.

  • New member recommendations were discussed.
  • The Oshoway Memorial Easter Egg Hunt was enjoyed by all in attendance.
  • Bruce Jones has worked with the Park to hold a Bluegrass Jam Event April 6th with concessions.
  • The Annual July 4* Park Event will be held Saturday, June 29th
  • John Richards and the Johnny Staats Project (Johnny Staats, Rick Poling and Roger Bush) will be performing. The Board needs to book bouncy houses, secure fireworks and finalize financial support. The Park Board always appreciates the community support at this event!
  • Pellets for plant growth have been ordered and shipped for pond treatment.
  • Hope Gas trout stocking ponds will be taking place sometime the end of April.
  • Reports were given on Tree Trimming Work Day, Disc Golf progress.
  • Plans for Park Ball Field and training for AED usage stored at barn were discussed.
    Board Member and Coach Brad Stevens will communicate with other coaches and Board.
  • Work on the East Field Shelter (Shelter/Bathrooms Project at Cabin site) is moving along with the two bathrooms nearing completion. Siding, dry wall, installation of washer/dryer, and metal ceiling in laundry room remains to be done.
  • Disappointment over damage to Community Building (holes in siding & two broken windows) was discussed which was apparently caused by ATV or vehicle spinning tires. Any help from community toward improving Park security would be appreciated. The subject of cameras was discussed again by members.
  • Shawn Steele, North Carolina Astrologer, has stepped forward to help the Park with Park Website. The website could provide viewers the ability to view Campground, Community Building, Shelters, and Cabin availability for rental.
  • Donnie Pitts will make presentation at the next County Commission Meeting for new picnic tables, stone for road, and cabin road grade work.
  • Some Board Members will return to former Sand Fork School site to finish playground landscaping promised and look at the changes that have been made in area.
