Calhoun Citizens for Accountability met to discuss what topics should be brought before the Calhoun County Commission during their last minute meeting that was called following Commissioner Helmick’s announcement that the Federal Government had caused Calhoun’s loss of the Broadband project that the Commissioners committed $1.2 Million dollars to last year and then failed to heed the warnings of neighboring counties that jumped ship earlier. Now, with the clock ticking down, the Commission has to determine another way to spend the money that is designated for infrastructure spending.
The concerned citizens group wants to ensure that the infrastructure money is used in the best interest of Calhoun County. Examples of possible uses would be internet, water, power, transportation and investments that would create economic activity, growth and development.
The group’s focus is primarily on requesting that the County use the money to fund waterline expansions in the Northern, Southern and Eastern parts of the County where service does not exist.
That recommendation will be one of the topics addressed at the “discussion/working” session planned for tomorrow morning at 9 a.m., but not the only topic.
If your family lives in any area that does not have water service, you are encouraged to attend tomorrow’s meeting. The County government seems to thrive on short notice meetings, which no doubt deter people from attending. Ridgeview News realizes it’s an inconvenience. But the Calhoun Citizens for Accountability and the Ridgeview News are requesting that, if there’s a way for you to attend, now is the time. There’s a few things happening in the Community that should concern every one of us. A second article will follow addressing further attempts to discourage, delay and possibly shut down work at the 1982 Foundation.
