Joseph Basnett, age 78, of Mogadore Ohio passed away after suffering health issues for some time, A son of Cleo Basnett he was a veteran of the Viet Nam war.
Several local folks attended and participated in the 75th W. Va. State Folk Festival at Glenville. Calhoun’s Terry Hickman won the pie contest (again) while a former Armadillo Farm woman placed in the over 50 fiddle contest. Saturday night’s square dance music was provided by the legendary Bobby Taylor. The music at the contests & concerts was spectacular. Lanny Meadows took his fancy chariot to the car show.
A big crowd was on hand for the 10th anniversary event at Shade Tree. There was live music and lots of food.
The bridge crew spent some time working under the bridge that crosses the Little Kanawha at Creston. It could be that the replacement span was, once again, delayed.
The Calhoun County deputy sheriff was serving papers in Wirt County at Creston. As she said, “I didn’t know this place existed!” W. Va. Secretary of State Kris Warner held a meeting with Calhoun officials in Grantsville.
During the last Creston ATV poker run a jeep got stuck on the hill going out of Rock Camp and held up riders for 3 hours. A request was made to the state highway men to do some minimal work so such would not happen again and if there was an emergency, a distressed hunter, a fire, etc. there would be access to the area. The District 3 Engineer replied back stating that the highway folks were very short on cash and fixing a road was not part of their “core maintenance” operation. Of course, such is ludicrous as the DOH spends $millions each year to cut tree limbs so there is no shade [big contracts to their buddies] and not so long back $10 million was spent on a round about at Glenville and earlier this season over $1 million was spent on W. Va. 5 at the Gilmer/Braxton line putting new black top on a very good roadway. The state road honcho said the adjacent landowners could fix the road themselves. Of course, the Creston Community Building does not own the land going up the Vandale Hollow section of Rock Camp. In prior years the road men went out of their way to be helpful and help where there was a need. Apparently the new plan is “we do our stuff and leave us alone as we answer to no one.”
The next Creston poker run is scheduled for July 19.
Antero, the Denver firm that has drilled numerous Marcellus wells in West Virginia. made it clear that they do not intend to pay royalties on natural gas liquids (NGLs) even though it is their policy to drill in liquid rich areas of the state. A proposal to pay, based on a fictional price is not how honest brokers would operate. When the firm started in W. Va. The head man said, “They have no idea what they have.” World class oil and gas formations should result in world class royalties & other benefits to W. Va. Historically royalties were based on a percentage of the actual income received for petroleum products produced from the well. Ethane should be used here, not sent to communist China to make Dictator Xi richer. Ethane cracker anyone?
The rainy weather has now been replaced by hot weather and some hay harvest has resumed.

The price of Pennsylvania grade crude was $73.93/bbl. With condensate fetching $55.93/bbl. And Marcellus & Utica light bringing $62.93/bbl. The price increase reflects the action between Israel (the Little Satan) and the mullahs of Iran. Over the weekend “the great Satan”(us) took out some atom bomb making facilities. Time will tell. The price of natural gas elsewhere is $3.85.
