Frederick’s Garage a Total Loss

Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched by Calhoun Control at 7:50 p.m. for a structure fire in the 100 block of Roughneck Ridge Road, Big Springs. A garage owned by Rodney Frederick was fully engulfed when both the Smithville Fire Department, who was called for mutual aid assistance, and Grantsville arrived on scene.

Earlier in the evening Mr. Frederick’s grandson had been working in the garage using an angle grinder which ignited the building through sparks. The garage was a complete loss as well as two freezers, a side by side and many tools.

The fire departments fought the fire for about an hour and a half, before getting it under control in frigid temperatures in the low teens. Three Grantsville fire trucks and two trucks from the Smithville Volunteer Fire Department with 9 fire fighters doused the blaze with water, pulled the structure apart and did all they could do to bring the fire under control and finally out about 9:30 p.m.
