Hit and Run or Hit and Stop?

An early morning accident on Monday, May 1st, 2023 left Sgt. C.J. Weekley asking the questions, “Was it a Hit and Run or was it a hit and stop? The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday morning when Joshua Moss, traveling in the south bound lane of South Calhoun Highway Route 16, collided with Gary Richards, Junior in front of Victory Baptist Church. Moss’ front drivers tire was destroyed and he was unable to drive any further.

Richards’ vehicle was also heavily damaged, with debris being scattered from Victory Baptist Church to Grantsville, however he continued on, finally coming to a stop (without a front drivers tire) in front of the Hardman’s Home Center storage building.

Both drivers said the other was at fault. It was not an obvious assumption that either wasn’t. Moss said that Richards fled the scene, Richards said he continued on to where he could call for help, after Moss hit him. Sgt. Weekly of the West Virginia State Police continues to investigate. Citations have yet to be issued.

There were no injuries in the Richards vehicle, Moss however had glass in his arm from the window smashing in at impact. Although Minnie was dispatched, there was no transport.
