Icy Roads Create Treacherous Driving in Calhoun

Eighty-eight year old Charles Smith of Barnes Run Road discovered the hard way that Calhoun Roads were covered with black ice. He was heading to a Church Fellowship in Elizabeth when he lost control of his Lincoln Town-car in the area of Annamoriah and slid out of the road and across the ditch line. His vehicle received minor damage but after being pulled out by Westfall’s Wrecker Service Mr. Smith drove himself home.

Trooper J.D. Richards of the West Virginia State Police was the investigating officer. Also on scene was Sheriff Warren Basnett, Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department and Minnie Hamilton Health Systems Ambulance Service.

The WV Department of Highways are currently treating the roads, but there is still considerable ice in the area. Emergency Service vehicles slid multiple times in route and did well to stand up on scene with the icy conditions. Caution is advised if driving tonight and a good word of advice would be to stay home if traveling can be prevented.
