The Little Kanawha Area Development Corporation submits this letter in its opposition to the proposed Valley-
North Transmission Line. A review of the proposal and consideration of concerns raised by businesses,
organizations and residents, leads to the conclusion that this project brings no meaningful benefits to Calhoun
County and its surrounding communities throughout West Virginia. The negative impact and dire consequences
such as environmental disruption, economic strain, and lasting visual impacts would bring harm to any and all
areas impacted, while most, if not all, benefits would flow to interests located outside our county and state.
Little Kanawha Area Development Corporation’s mission is to promote economic growth that is responsible
and appropriate for our region. We continue to invest in expanding recreation and business opportunities,
including ongoing tourism development tied to the Little Kanawha River Trail, The Dark Skies Project, our
county parks, farming and small business investments. This proposed corridor threatens these longstanding
efforts while providing no direct payoff for those who live and work here.
LKADC is also concerned about potential health-related effects. Many community members have voiced
apprehension about long-term risks associated with adding new transmission infrastructure near homes,
businesses, schools and local communities. Even where some issues are still being studied, we believe these
concerns warrant careful attention, a transparent evaluation, and appropriate responses as part of a rigorous
review. The well-being of our residents must remain a central factor in any decision.
Our residents and businesses play a real role in the process, along with protection of their property rights and
safeguards for their communities. Decisions should reflect the interests of West Virginians first, rather than
outside priorities.
Little Kanawha Area Development Corporation stands with our local leaders, businesses and community
members in opposition to the Valley-North Transmission Line and respectfully requests that the permitting
agencies either deny the request or require alternative approaches that do not impose an unnecessary burden on
Calhoun County, its residents and businesses.
