Kyler and Heather Propst were visiting family when a garage a short distance behind their home was discovered to be fully engulfed. Mark Butler and Shawn Rush passed the home and noticed the fire and began to take what action they could. Shawn dialed 911 to report the fire and Mark used his personal truck to pull one of two vehicles parked close enough to the building that they were receiving damage. The second truck was too hot to move by the time Mark got the first one out of the way.
The Arnoldsburg Volunteer Fire Department and Grantsville VFD were dispatched at 7:22 p.m.
Grantsville Chief David Johnson was the first Fire Department member on scene, living very close to the area. He cleared the scene for Arnoldsburg Volunteer Fire Department (2 units), Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department (3 units) and 1 unit from the West Fork Volunteer Fire Department. Calhoun EMS as well as Sheriff Warren Basnett were on scene to assist if needed.
The garage held two small atv’s, various tools and other belongings which were all a total loss. The heat from the fire damaged two vehicles parked close by. Shawn and Mark used a water hose to spray the house and trucks until the fire department arrived on scene, likely sparing further loss by the Propst family.
This fire scene was a wonderful example of a community working together to support a family and emergency services through mutual aid.
