Phyllis Ruth Jett Starcher Stump Hathaway Obituary

Phyllis Ruth Jett Starcher Stump went home to be with her heavenly Lord and Savior on July 19th, 2025 after a long battle with cancer.

She was born in October 1934, at Minnora, WV, the daughter of the late William Jett and Erma Bailey Jett.

Growing up, Phyllis enjoyed farm life and sometimes helped out in her parents’ small country store in Arnoldsburg. In 1952, Phyllis graduated from Calhoun County High School. Later that year, she married her first husband William “Bill” Starcher. The couple raised four children – Diana (Gene) Satterfield, Sherry (Poe) Gunn, Stuart Kim (Robin) Starcher, and Kevin (Kelly Roberts) Starcher. Phyllis also embraced her role as a mother figure to her stepchildren, Linda, Denise, and Mark, and countless neighborhood kids over the years. She enjoyed gardening, going on adventures with her friend Carol Jones, and cooking for her family, especially family favorites of pies, homemade rolls, and bologna salad. She also loved new experiences, working as a receptionist, a truck driver, an in-home care provider, and traveling all over the state as a patient transporter. Phyllis’s favorite role was being a grandmother to her seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great grandchildren. She loved watching her family grow and cherished the time she spent with them. She will be missed everyday by everyone who loved her. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Paul, first husband Bill, second husband Dean Stump, and her beloved daughter, Sherry.

A funeral service will be held at Stump Funeral Home & Cremation, Inc., 1440 Arnoldsburg Road, Arnoldsburg, WV, 25234 on Friday, July 25, 2025 at 1:00 p.m., with Rev. Rick Metheney officiating.
