GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Football team faced the league’s best rushing attack Saturday (Oct. 24) and fell to the Hilltoppers of West Liberty on Homecoming, 44-22. WLU ran for 278 yards on the ground and the Pioneers had over 300 yards through the air as GSU moved to (1-7, 0-5 MEC) while the Hilltoppers continue to sit atop the MEC at (7-1, 5-0 MEC).
1st Quarter
It didn’t take long for West Liberty to strike, as the Hilltoppers scored on just four plays to open the game with a touchdown a minute and 33 seconds in. After the Pioneers were forced to punt, WLU looked to be driving again but Bryson Oliver made an incredible interception down the sideline to give Glenville State the ball back. However, West Liberty’s defense immediately gave their offense the ball back with two extra points, stuffing Jamir Fox in the endzone for a safety.
Arguably the nation’s best running back, Hunter Patterson, then went 69 yards on the first play of the next drive to make it 16-0. A blocked field goal on the ensuing drive led to another Patterson touchdown run, this time from 28 yards out as the Hilltoppers grew their lead to 23.
2nd Quarter
The Pioneers took advantage of good field position with a touchdown drive that was capped off with JD Sherrod finding Caden Harris across the middle for the team’s leader in receptions first touchdown. The speed of Patterson would stab the Pioneers again shortly after, as the track star went for 47 yards to give WLU a 30-7 lead going into halftime.
3rd Quarter
Glenville State made it a two possession game to open the new half, as Sherrod found Kyree Bunny on a fourth down pass to complete a four-plus minute drive. A pair of defensive stops by both squads kept the score at 30-14 as the teams prepped for the final quarter of play.
4th Quarter
Sherrod and Harris connected once again three minutes into the fourth for one of the longest plays of the year for the Pioneer offense, as the UTEP transfer was found streaking down the field for 64 yards. The two-point conversion would be successful, making it 30-22. A 74-yard kickoff return setup a one-play drive for West Liberty, as the Hilltoppers quickly grew their advantage back to two possessions. WLU then officially put the game out of reach with a little over five minutes left with another score.
