Despite the challenges West Virginia faces when it comes to literacy education, some schools are going above and beyond to reshape the narrative.
Through The 74’s Bright Spots project, which analyzed data from roughly 42,000 public schools nationwide, we identified schools where third-grade reading proficiency significantly exceeds what would be predicted based on local poverty rates. These schools emerged as positive outliers in early literacy.
We’re proud to recognize the following West Virginia schools as Bright Spots for Excellence in Reading Education:
Madison Elementary School
Hollywood Elementary
Gihon Elementary School
Pleasant Hill Elementary School
Ramage Elementary
