Betty Jo Ann Peggs, 82 of Glenville, WV; (formerly of Coxs Mills) departed this earthly life in the early evening hours of Saturday, July 25, 2026 at the Glenville Center following an extended illness.
She was born March 21, 1944 in Gilmer County, WV; daughter of the late Opal and Glennis (Horner) Townsend.
Jo Ann lived life on her own terms. She was fiercely independent, spirited, and never one to shy away from speaking her mind. Those who knew her knew exactly where they stood, but they also knew her heart was deeply rooted in the things she loved most—her family, her community, her animals, and the generations of young people she helped along the way.
She found peace and happiness with her hands in the dirt, tending to the flowers and plants she loved so dearly. Her flower beds reflected the care and pride she took in everything she did. She had a special place in her heart for animals and rarely met one she didn’t enjoy caring for. She was also known for her love of collecting angels, a hobby that brought her great joy over the years.
Jo Ann devoted much of her life to 4-H and believed deeply in the value of hard work, responsibility, and giving young people the opportunity to succeed. As a founding leader of the Coxs Mills Tail Twisters 4-H Club, she helped shape countless lives through agriculture and livestock. Her dedication reached beyond Gilmer County, as she formed lasting friendships and strong ties with the Wood County 4-H community over nearly two decades of attending shows and supporting youth. She especially loved the livestock ring, where she took great pride in watching young exhibitors grow in confidence year after year.
Among her favorite memories were the countless hours spent alongside her grandchildren, showing cattle. Those days together created a bond and memories that will be treasured forever.
Jo Ann’s greatest legacy is found in the family she loved and the many young people whose lives she helped shape. Though she could be stubborn and outspoken, she was equally hardworking, loyal, and generous with her time. She believed in doing things the right way, expected others to do the same, and left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
On March 26, 1960 she was married to Robert R. Peggs who preceded her in death on December 20, 2010.
Surviving are 4 children, Angela Nicholas and husband Eric of Cox’s Mills, WV; Robert Peggs of Leon, WV, Randy Peggs of Wheeling, WV; and Michael Peggs and wife Melissa of Sand Fork, WV; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Additionally, she is survived by 2 brothers, John Townsend of McRae, AR; and Billy Townsend of Elkton, MD; with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other wonderful family and friends.
Along with her parents and husband, Jo Ann is preceded in death by 6 siblings, Fred, Steve, Jack, and Bobby Joe Townsend, and Norma and Dorothy Lang.
Jo Ann’s life was one of dedication—to her family, her community, and the traditions she cherished. Her strength, determination, and unmistakable personality will be remembered for years to come. She leaves behind blooming flowers, treasured memories, and a legacy that lives on through the lives she helped shape.
A funeral service will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., 2 Vanhorn Drive, Glenville, WV; 26351 at 2:00 PM; Saturday, August 1, 2026 with Pastor Lloyd Stewart officiating. Following services, Jo Ann’s request for cremation will be honored. Friends will be received from 12:00 noon – 2:00 PM; Saturday at the mortuary in Glenville.
