Bingo will be back in Creston on Saturday, July 11 with the doors opening at noon & the game starting at 1 P. M. It is cool in the community building so come, visit, much on goodies & have a great time and work to beat Denise.
The big Creston summer ATV Poker run will be Saturday, July 25. Bring the whole family for a fun filled day.
Creston folks celebrated the nation’s 250th birthday by going to the Fireman’s event in Elizabeth and events elsewhere. Camp Dade at Creston had fireworks and some took their families to Munday Beach for a fun filled time.
One of the floats in the Elizabeth parade was the Daughters of the American Revolution, a civic group that honors women [and girls] whose ancestors fought to free us from King George III. There are many women in Calhoun & Wirt counties that qualify. Peter McCune, a revolutionary patriot, has a run named after him at Creston and Ann’s Run was named for one of his wives. Paulser Knob at Hur was named for his grandson. Also there are descendants of Abram Vandal, Willliam Davis and George Oakley (the Hopkins family) and no doubt many more.
On Saturday afternoon there was a storm at Annamoriah (with rain) and a big sycamore tree took down the power lines across from the mouth of Annamoriah Creek on the Big or Knight bend. Service was not restored until Sunday afternoon.
Nancy Blankenship, age 80,who had been living at Lost Creek, passed away. The widow of Sgt. James Blankenship she had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Private burial will be beside her husband at Ground Hog (Mt. Pleasant). After retiring from the Army the Blankenships lived and farmed on Chestnut Run.
Jerry Riggs, age 77, passed away after a fight with cancer. For years he was the road grader man in Calhoun County and he had a host of friends. Burial was on the hill above the Bryner Chapel Church at Joker and a large crowd came in spite of the heat.
The other day a local resident had occasion to cross the big interstate bridge down at the Mouth of the Elk and, wouldn’t you know, he hit a pothole at the end of the bridge. Seems Dimbulb, the big road boss, had other things to do. Now when one is on Ann’s Run road one can swerve but with several lanes of fast traffic there is no dodging the “imperfections in the surface of the roadway.”
Freddie Bush & associates put up several acres of hay in the Creston area.
Several of Steve Loudin’s family were visiting with him at Camp Dade.
Dee Myerly & Brian Stutler, Bessie Arthur & daughter were attending to business in Elizabeth.
The other day Russell Hupp had three fawns in his lawn. Some local folks finally saw some wild turkey hens with young ones.
The United Methodist Church is now in the W. Va. Supreme Court fighting against individual churches over $$$. In an interesting twist the church hierarchy that has embraced all sorts of liberal government actions is now talking about how the courts should not be involved in “church business” even though fraud is being alleged. Can one really have it both ways?
Speaking of courts, seems that coal baronet Jim Justice paid off some small liens [three of five] but the IRS slapped him with another $3.6 million in unpaid tax including withheld taxes from employees. Seems being a U. S. Senator does not insulate one from the tax man, especially when one has a long history.
Fighting over data centers continue and one would think that they were worse that medical waste incinerators and such. The location in Warwood [Wheeling] is a former heavy manufacturing facility (a foundry). And the Google place in Putnam County is said to going to be fueled only by “renewable energy” whatever that might be. The Berkely County facility will cost $4 billion and involves 548 acres. A no data center sign is up along W. Va. 5 at Annamoriah.
It would seem that the cluster of them and the additional ones planned in northern Virginia must be just fine but it is not just fine to use W. Va. As a utility corridor taking out thousands of acres for new power lines that will not serve local residents but cost local folks higher electric bills.
The price of local Pennsylvania grade crude dropped to $67.50/bbl. With condensate fetching just $50.50/bbl. With Marcellus & Utica light bringing $57.50/bbl. Natural gas elsewhere is $3.25/MMBTU and July gas on TransCanada (TCO) is $2.49 and on Dominion/Warren Buffett (DTI) is $2.33.
For those who missed out on the big Ergon catfish fry at Marietta, there will be another July 22 at Ergon’s facility near Mercer Pennsylvania.
