David “Lane” Smith Obituary

David Lane Smith, 84, of Cedarville, WV; departed this earthly life in the mid-morning hours of Friday, November 7, 2025 at his residence in Cedarville, with his loving family by his side.

He was born April 16, 1941 in Cedarville, son of the late Clavel and Myrtle (Creasy) Smith.

Lane is a graduate of Normantown High School, class of 1959. He is a life-long member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church and was a Circuit Clerk from 1975 through 2009 for Gilmer County. Additionally, he served seven years as a Deputy Sheriff and he was a bus driver. He has been involved with the Lions Club since 1975 and was an avid supporter of local sports. In his spare time, he enjoyed farming, hunting, and cherished spending time with and spoiling his beloved grandkids.

On December 19, 1959 Lane was united in marriage to Mary Lou (Kuhl) Smith, who survives at their Cedarville home.

Surviving are 6 children, Danny (Stacy) Smith of Cedarville, WV, Ricky (Shelli) Smith of Martinsburg, WV, Roger (Tammy) Smith of Cedarville, WV, Mary Alice (Bill) Battles of Ormond Beach, FL, Steven Smith of Grove City, OH, and Lu Ann (David) Drake of Glenville, WV; and 3 siblings, Gary Smith of Weston, WV, Mary Ann (Jim) Atha of Morgantown, WV, and Robert (Lawayne) Smith of Marietta, OH.

Also surviving are 17 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousin, and many other wonderful family and friends.

Along with his parents (Clavel and Myrtle), Lane is preceded in death by a brother, James Smith.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., 2 Vanhorn Drive, Glenville, WV; 26351 at 11:00 AM; Tuesday, November 11, 2025 with Pastor Larry Fisher officiating. Burial will follow on the Smith Family farm in Cedarville. Friends will be received from 4:00 – 7:00 PM; Monday evening at the Mortuary in Glenville.
