Delbert N. Sears Obituary

Delbert N. Sears, 93, passed away on June 26, 2025, at United Hospital Center in Bridgeport, WV.

Delbert was born October 25, 1931, and raised in Walnut, Calhoun County. In his later years, he loved telling stories from his days “up on Walnut”. Like the day as a little kid, he broke his arm playing baseball at school and doc came on horseback to the school to cast his arm and gave him the $3 invoice to take home to his dad.

Delbert graduated from Calhoun County High School and then went on to proudly serve his country in the US Army. During the majority of his time in the Army, Delbert served as a medical clerk in Okinawa, Japan, a world away from Walnut in more ways than one. After his time in the Army, he worked in Ohio before moving back to WV. After returning to WV, Delbert, together with his wife, Jean, owned and operated Sears Exxon Service Station in Stumptown. They proudly served Stumptown and the surrounding communities for over 65 years. Jean and Delbert were always supportive of local schools and churches and had a very giving spirit, never turning away anyone in need. If Delbert was not at the store, he could be found taking care of his cows, in the hay field, fixing fence or working on some other part of his farm.

He is survived by his two daughters, Cathy L. Sears of Mebane, NC, and Janet K. Sears of Mineral Wells, WV, In-Laws, Tony and Sue Collins, John and Tish Vannoy and Robert Miller, as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Delbert was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, his brothers Les, Dorsey and Darius and his sisters Olena, Genevieve and Delores.

Cathy and Janet would like to offer a special thanks to Ruth Ann Goodrich and Randall Bragg for all of the time and efforts they gave in helping to care for their dad and mom.

A funeral service will be held at Stump Funeral Home & Cremation, Inc., 107 Market St., Grantsville, WV 26147, on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with John Vannoy officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 9-11 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to The American Diabetes Association, (diabetes.org) or The Disabled American Veterans, (DAV.org).
