Lenore Fay Smith Jones, lovingly known as “Sis,” 90, of Big Bend, West Virginia, passed away on September 18, 2026 at WVU Camden Clark Medical Center, Parkersburg, WV.
Lenore was born April 2, 1936, in Big Bend, WV. She was one of three
children born to Jay and Mildred Shrader Smith.
Lenore married Denzil L. Jones on December 11, 1954. Together, they built a life rooted in family, hard work, and the farm she loved so dearly.
She is survived by her two daughters, Roberta Frederick and husband Rodney of Big Springs,and Melissa Hixon and her husband Elvin of Big Bend. She is also survived by her sister Charlotte, brother-in-law Jimmy, and her special brother-in-law Denny.
Affectionately known as “Grandma” and “Mamaw,” Lenore was deeply loved by her four
grandchildren: Jessica McCumbers and husband Josh, Jeremy Frederick and wife Ashley, Kayla Wetzel and husband DL, and Joshua Hixon.
She also leaves behind her beloved great-grandchildren: Dakota, Garrett, Allison, Skylar, Easton, Troy, Mariah, Aiden, Bryce, and Adley, as well as her newest great-great-grandchildren Grayson and Talladega. Sissy also leaves behind her many nieces and nephews that loved her dearly.
Lenore was preceded in death by her parents, Jay and Mildred “Granny” Smith; her brother, Harold “Bud” Smith; and her devoted husband, Denzil “Pete” Jones. She was also preceded in death by her sisters-in-law: Gladys, Marge, Deloris, Oleta, Nancy, Joann, and Leona; and her brothers-in-law: Cleo, Jule, Roger “Tink”, Harold, Frank, John, Norman, and Lester.
Lenore loved the farm where she spent so much of her life. She was a strong hard working woman who found joy in simple things, cared deeply for her family, and created a legacy that will continue through the generations who loved her. Her hands tended the land, cared for the animals, prepared food, mended what was broken, and lovingly served her family throughout her 90 years of life.
She will be remembered as the matriarch of her family; a woman whose strength, resilience, and love helped shape every generation that followed her. Her life was simple, full, and deeply meaningful, and her memory will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
A private family service will be held and she will be laid to rest at the Jones Family Cemetery, Munday, West Virginia.
