Doris E. McElvey Obituary

Doris E. McElvey, 84, of Ripley, WV (formerly of Naples, FL) departed this life to be with her heavenly Father on July 18, 2023.

She was born in Calhoun County, WV on June 17, 1939,a daughter of the late Richard and Chloe Butler Alfred.

She was a graduate of Calhoun County High School class of 1956. She attended Glenville State College, obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in elementary education and later a Master’s Degree from WVU. She taught at Arnoldsburg Elementary, moved to Naples, FL and taught and retired from Avalon Elementary.

While living in Florida, she was a member of the North Naples Methodist Church where she was active in the church and Stephen Ministries. After moving to Ripley, WV, she became a member of the Grace Community Church.

Doris was a seamstress and loved making quilts and hand quilting.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William T. McElvey, daughter, Peggy Sue Conley; step-daughter, Jennifer McElvey, grandson, Jeremy Spiker; brothers, Jimmy & Roger Alfred.

She is survived by her sons, Kenneth (Sherlene) Conley of Ripley, WV, Richard E. Conley (Dick) of Mt. Zion, WV; daughters, Sheryl (Sherry) Hardway of Grantsville, WV and J. Diane (Al) Hanson of Fulks Run, VA; step-son, Trevis McElvey of Naples, FL and step-daughter, Kathryn Anders of Colorado. 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, sister, Sally Gizzard of Dover, TN, and sister-in-law, Bonnie Alfred of Wooster, OH.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at 12:00 pm at the Prudence Chapel, Minnora, WV with Pastor Tim Parsons officiating. Family will receive family and friends from 11:30 until the time of the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, it was Doris’s wishes for donations to be made to: Grace Community Church, P.O. Box 98, Kenna, WV 24248.
