We just celebrated the 249th anniversary of our freedom as a country and as a people.
As a state we have lived under the belief that “Mountaineers are always free”.
But recently three people have decided to infringe on some of our freedom starting a little bit at a time… starting with trying to control what people are allowed to do with or what they are allowed to have on their own property.
That being said our founding fathers believed that private ownership of property and the right to be able to pursue that right without it being infringed upon by the government was paramount!
This was one of the very basic and essential rights eluded to in the declaration of independence.
Calhoun is a very poor and rural county with quite a few senior citizens. I believe this new ordinance will be a serious burden on the people of Calhoun county with three people making the kind of decisions that can adversely affect the elderly and those who are already financially challenged.
I have seen this before…is Planning and Zoning next on the agenda?
The argument that removing old barns in the county will bring a financial boom to the county is quite the stretch… maybe we can get more people who don’t like it here to move in and turn Calhoun into more like the place they came from. Many people that were born and raised here and people like myself who moved here twenty-seven years ago live here because we love it here.
Tell me something how much better is life outside of the county with all their “Ordinances” and their attempts to control the people because they believe they know best. Calhoun is truly free… but for how much longer?!
I assume the council has a process in place for the poorer people to have equal access to challenge the ordinance on equal footing as the richer people do and who will undoubtedly have their unique advantages. This is in my view is picking winners and losers…very inappropriate for three people to have that kind of power over six thousand plus residents of Calhoun?
I will end with the way I started.

They act like having an old barn or a couple old trucks in the yard are destroying property values in our area. It’s obvious this isn’t true when places are selling for $200-300k that were barely worth $60-80k around 4-5 years ago. Hardly anyone from around here are the ones buying them, they’re all being sold to out of state people who won’t even mow their yards more than once or twice a year. Calhoun will never have anything more than what they have right now, regardless of all the promises being made by certain organizations. 3-4 years in and all we’ve gotten is a pool and someone who can’t pay their bills. Luckily the Lane Family secured the deal and put the Dollar General store in on their property in Arnoldsburg like they did over in Ritchie County. Really shows the difference between them being a family and a medicine company that’s all talk expecting the people of our county to beg for them to put a factory in our area. If I owned the company and was the President of it, I would put the location where I pleased.
