Mary Francis Somerville Obituary

Mary Francis Somerville passed into God’s arms on June 5, 2026, following a brief illness.

She was the daughter of Edna Mae Ward and the late Hubert Longfellow. Born in Wirt County, West Virginia, Mary was a 1980 graduate of Wirt County High School and worked a variety of jobs throughout her life, including Mustang Survival, Kellwood Sweater Company, and as a substitute cook in Wirt County Schools.

She was preceded in death by her father, Hubert Longfellow; her brother, Roger Longfellow; and her grandson, Roman Mitchell.

In addition to her mother, Edna Mae Ward, she is survived by her daughter, Chelsea Somerville Mitchell and her husband, Jordan; her beloved grandchildren, Asher and Bridger Mitchell; her life partner, Vic Nutter; her brothers, John Longfellow (Bonnie) and Wayne Longfellow (Yolanda); step-daughter, Amanda Church; step-granddaughter, Rayne Church; and her lifelong friends, Melissa Dotson, Annette Lewis, Janet Priselac, and Linda Vlach, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

An understated individual, Mary was generous, kind-hearted, and deeply loved by many. The beach was her favorite place to be, especially sitting near the ocean and enjoying its peaceful beauty. She was a faithful member of the Church of the Nazarene in Elizabeth, where she taught Sunday School. In addition to her love of the beach, Mary enjoyed tending to her flowers and spending time shopping with her lifelong friends, Annette Lewis and Melissa Dotson.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on her birthday, June 18, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a memorial service beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Matheny Whited Funeral Home, 97 Juliana Street, Elizabeth, WV 26143.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Adoration Hospice for the compassionate care, comfort, and support they provided during Mary’s final days. Their kindness and dedication will never be forgotten.
