Mavis Jane (Collins) Adams, 91, of Walton, West Virginia, was born October 7, 1934, and passed away at home on August 5, 2026, after a long battle with dementia.
She was the daughter of Shelby Burl and Beulah (Holbert) Collins of Walton. She was preceded in death by her parents, multiple siblings, and her husband, Charles Emery Adams of Mount Zion, WV, in Calhoun County.
She is survived by three daughters, Deborah Bird of Elkview, Charlina and Marlina Adams of Walton, her grandson, Robert Bird of Elkview, four sisters, and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was especially fond of the family’s sixteen year old beagle, Agatha Christie “Aggie” Adams.
She was a graduate of Walton High School and Glenville State College. Her first job was teaching in a one room schoolhouse and she went on to teach home economics in Ritchie County. In 1989, she eventually retired from teaching third grade for many years at Arnoldsburg Elementary in Calhoun County.
She was well known for her culinary skills and famous amongst family and friends for her vanilla butter nut pound cakes, among many other recipes. She was a quilter, a baker, and a “happy day maker” for everyone she saw.
She will be greatly missed, but as a Christian, the family finds comfort in knowing she is “absent from the body and present with the Lord.”
The family will observe a graveside service at Pleasant Hill UMC Cemetery, Grantsville, WV in Calhoun County, on Sunday at 1:30 PM with seating beginning at 1 PM. Rev.
