There are things I think the government needs to look into here in Calhoun County.
Of course there are things like theft and corruption that needs to be addressed, and I am sure they will be, but honestly those are things that everybody can see.
What I am talking about are things that people probably just overlook:
1. The electronic sign at Calhoun County Park. The signs sits in front of the park and when driving down the hill from Mount Zion at night you can be hit by something like a million suns when the sign flashes to its white color theme. What is ironic is that the park merchandises itself as a dark skies location to attract star gazers. My suggestion is to tone down the white sign a bit.
2. The need for guard rails in the turn of the Marsh Plant Bank (you probably are not old enough to remember when it was called that, still …) When you leave the main highway – West Virginia Route 5 – and go up the secondary route (Hog Knob Ridge Road) the turn at the top of the hill has eroded over time and now it is very possible that a vehicle could go into a slide and go up and over the hillside and down the very steep and tall hillside onto Route 5. It would probably kill those in the vehicle and anyone they fell onto on Route 5. A small guard rail could go a long way into making things safer.
3. Doing some correcting on names of rural backroads. For instance I overheard a conversation with some folks looking for directions to Rowell’s Run. I thought to myself how the bastardization of the language and names has changed what is legitimately Rowh’s Run into Rowell’s Run. There were some Rowh’s who lived there but I cannot remember any Rowell’s living there. Not a big deal actually just not historically correct.
4. After fixing that naming project perhaps we could educate people as to where Henrietta is – from the bottom of Hog Knob Hill to the Gilmer County line – since it is not really Booger Hole but Henrietta. I guess the Booger Hole thing just stuck after the Booger Hole boys lost that gunfight battle at Jenus Crites house when the KKK decided to burn a cross at a party that was going on only to have the Hog Knob boys shoot back.
Anyhow you guys can work on fixing these little things then work on fixing the corruption and theft.
And remember you need to trat corruption and theft like cancer and remember the first thing you do when fighting cancer is to get rid of the cancer.
Until next time stay safe but don’t live your life in a bottle.
